The WMS (Warehouse Management System) is a complex tool in the very complicated world of clinical trials. The logistics aspect of clinical trials is actually quite simple when compared to the actual clinical trial however this tool is still very robust. With the baseline production of modules already underway when I arrived, some of the major contributions that I made was to process and interaction design. First I spent several months interviewing and studying the tool and current process and interjected minimally. I had made several recommendations to the project lead but they went unnoticed until I pitched my process improvements to the Managing Director.
The previous lead was the Warehouse Manager and was the number one person to discuss protocols but he wasn’t familiar with software design at all.
First I implemented a kanban board and assigned priorities to development requests. Then we started to test the product internally so we could understand what mistakes we were making and what we were doing well. Then we started with new modules, which included understanding the protocols and interactions. Also, it was important to understand how these new modules interacted with existing data. Then we did quick prototypes and tested those with users. These were used to refine requirements and once requirements were complete they were passed to the development team.
It was estimated by the Managing Director of our off-shore development team that my process improvements saved 25% dev time in just a few weeks of implementation.
I was also heavily involved in contract negotiation, testing, and managing the development team as well as working with the Warehouse Manager in developing new modules.
Here is a look at some of those deliverables:

The ability for a sponsor to see their invoice within a WMS turned out to be a MAJOR feature for potential clients, based on user interviews. It was mentioned that our particular user has never seen a WMS that was capable of this functionality.
